I had been in the hospital many times the last few years, more than 30 visits within three years, primarily due to severe headaches and vomiting. None of the emergency room doctors could pinpoint what was causing it, some thought it was due to migraines, others thought it was cervicogenic headaches from neck issues since i had compression at the C6-7 level. These headaches seemed more debilitating than migraines, they always came with other physical symptoms such as facial pain, sore neck, an...

What is it like dealing with the medical system during a pandemic for a deaf patient? It’s nearly impossible, incredibly isolating, dehumanizing and truly humiliating. It was a very difficult lesson and I learned quickly who I could rely on for help. I was truly alone for a long time, and had to deal with everything by myself. I still struggle with it on a daily basis and do the best I can under these extraordinary circumstances.
I had spinal surgery right in the middle of our second and th...

I think that I speak for a lot of people that 2020 was an incredibly challenging year, more so for those of us with disabilities. As a deaf person being taken to the ER twelve times in a single year, I learned very quickly that hospitals are not very accommodating to patients like me since I rely on lip-reading, observing facial expressions and body language. Due to COVID, that changed the way I could understand the paramedics and medical staff since masks covered their faces and muffled thei...

As a child, I was always fascinated by the concept of heroes, such as Wonder Woman, Superman, the Million Dollar Man, the Incredible Hulk, and Bionic Woman. I loved how they could utilize their unique skills and super powers to help others. It was amazing how they were willing to tackle a challenge head-on by using their strengths even though they had their own share of limitations or disabilities. What was especially intriguing was discovering that the actor, Lou Ferrigno, from the Incredibl...

Walk a mile in my shoes - COVID style
Going to the hospital this week for my spinal injections was a nightmare for someone like me with a profound hearing loss during the COVID crisis. Everywhere I looked, everyone was wearing a mask. This is the worst thing to do since I have absolutely no idea what is being said. I rely on lip reading as much as possible and need to see facial expressions. Fortunately, the staff that I deal with on a regular basis know me very well and were very understanding about my situation. They knew I was...

Advocacy. I cannot stress how important this word is to me. I’ve been an advocate since I was six years old, I’m almost fifty and that’s a long time to stand up for my rights. It shouldn’t have to be this hard to obtain equal rights like everyone else. I’m in constant warrior mode, every single day. And It’s freaking exhausting.
Some days, it’s dealing with a stubborn or ignorant receptionist at a doctor’s office who refuses to email or text my appointments even though th...

I’m sitting on the rooftop on a hot summer day, battling a bad cold and reading a new book by the Fab Five called “Queer Eye - Love Yourself”. Funnily enough, I've been seeing a lot of endorsement about loving ourselves which is a big sign for me since it’s also in many of BTS’s songs and videos. That’s saying something.

I agree and this is exactly what I'm working on these days, learning to let go of situations that I have no control over. Finding HOPE

April 2016
This week's theme is finding
inspiration and
hope. Today I saw a quote from Christopher Reeve that fit the bill perfectly. We live in a busy world and often we find ourselves feeling completely overwhelmed. Sometimes, that leads to neglecting time for ourselves, doing something kind to our heart and soul. We need to learn to set aside quiet moments of self reflection so that we can grow as a person, from the inside out.
It doesn't matter how you do it, whether it's going for a walk, meditatio...

After Wentworth Miller, actor from Prison Break and Legends of Tomorrow, posted a deeply personal message about his struggles, it made me realize how important it was to be honest about it. He chose to move forward by sharing his thoughts and self care techniques through his social media which in turn is helping so many others. In my eyes, he's doing the right thing. He's showing us that there is no shame in being open about our daily struggles and talking about it.
Like him, that's one of th...

Most people know that I'm not afraid to speak my mind. I have no problems going up to someone and telling them that what they did was morally wrong. If they're behaving in an unprofessional or unethical manner, particularly towards someone with a hearing loss or general disability, I will put my foot down and tell them. Why? Because it's not right to ignore our needs or dismiss our problems. It's a part of our life and while we do our best to educate others on our daily struggles or lack of r... Continue reading ...

I had originally tried to watch Glee when it was first released several years ago and it didn't really blow my socks off despite what the critics and reviewers said. They kept raving about it and I failed to see why. At the time, my first impression was that it was rude, somewhat unpolished, and unethical. I did not appreciate the way people with disabilities were being portrayed. Yes, I realize that it was meant to reflect the good, bad and ugly aspects of high school, however, I found Coach...

Living in the darkness is never easy, It's a constant struggle and a heavy weight on our shoulders. In a strange way, it's very much like being in a prison. It has been like this since I was very, very young. Just when I thought I had managed to escape from it, somehow, it finds a way back into my life when I least expect it. Lately, the burden seems heavier than usual.

I know that I've mentioned this many times before but I will say it again: people with disabilities have the right to request a more accessible platform at school, work, sports, as well as services such as restaurants and theatres. They have every right to speak up about what services are creating a barrier that is preventing them from being included like everyone else. There cannot be any form of discrimination towards people with a disability. There is a law in place that helps enforce more...

I recently came across an article that reminded me of the importance of staying true to our heart. Following our dreams is more important than listening to someone trying to destroy it. Just because we have a hearing loss doesn't mean that we can't try.
For some reason, people seem to think that it's okay to offer unsolicited advice on my life. I've heard it all. Ironically. Don't get me wrong, some of those individuals genuinely thought that they were doing a good thing but in reality, it wa...

After wearing hearing aids for over 40 years, I've learned a lot. I'm fully aware of my limitations and what works for me. It's not necessarily because I'm stubborn, it's due to the fact that I have oodles of experience. I know when someone is trying to pull a fast con on me or trying ridiculously hard to convince me that a particular brand is more superior than others. I’ve been asked if I’ve found the transition of going deaf from a profound hearing loss easier than becoming hearing impaired later in life from a normal hearing. Honestly? I really can’t answer that question because I was born with a severe to profound hearing loss. I have no idea what normal hearing sounds like. It was only in recent years that I went deaf in one ear from being exposed to toxic antibiotics.
However, what I can say is that growing up with a severe hearing loss has had ...

10 Hilarious things people say to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Normally I don't post other people blogs like this, but this one totally made my day! I was laughing so hard that tears were running down my face. It's simply hilarious and an honest reflection of things people often say to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. It happens ALL the time. Plus, there are superbly funny pics of Captain Picard illustrating those comments.

Heros

We all want someone to look up to, a particular hero who is fearless, embodies incredible strength, and is willing to stand by our side to help guide us. It's that shining star of inspiration that lifts us out of the darkness.
If you ask me who my hero is, the answer may surprise you. It's not a dashing prince, although Harry comes pretty close, or a firefighter, it's Nick Vuijicic. He was born with no arms or legs (tetra-amelia syndrome). Like me, he endured a difficult childhood. Grad... Continue reading ...

I've met all sorts of people and kids from around the world. The ones that steal my heart are those that have a disability. Many have had a difficult life, particularly as a young child. They've endured the most unimaginable horrors that no one should ever go through. Being bullied is just one aspect of cruelty that they have encountered. Coffee and chocolate
Posted by jennifer gibson on Wednesday, September 4, 2013,
Writers have all sorts of tools to help them with their creative writing process. For some of us, it's sipping hot cups of coffee, nibbling on chocolate, listening to head-bopping music or having a scented candle nearby. It's not an easy task to sit down, stare at a blank piece of paper and pray that the pen magically starts writing as if we were at Hogwarts. We're not wizards, we can't snap our fingers and presto! a chapter suddenly appears. It's a long and arduous process. And sometimes...

Growing up is never easy. Going through school with a disability makes it much more difficult to get through the day without being tormented by people you trusted and expected to be your friend. Q & A
Posted by jennifer gibson on Monday, January 16, 2012,
I'm often asked "What inspired you to write about a
hearing impaired teenager?". Well, It's true what they say about writing
from true life, if it feels real then the reader will say "Wow!" and
immediately connect to it. I wanted to offer something new for young
readers, I wanted them to experience life from a different perspective.
Quite often, when people meet me, they always ask a ton of questions of
what's like to be severely hard of hearing. It just made sense to
write it all d...

Harry Potter, books & movies...
Posted by jennifer gibson on Saturday, January 14, 2012,
Just did some "light reading" this morning as I perused through the massively thick volume of Harry Potter Page to Screen: The complete film making journey. Sharp eyed fans will recognize my tongue in cheek humour here (Hint: Hermione said this phrase in the library while doing research on Nicholas Flammel.) It really is a heavy tome.
It was an astounding read and I'm only halfway through it. It's filled with fascinating tidbits from the directors and producers, personal insights from the a...

Teen years...
Posted by jennifer gibson on Friday, January 13, 2012,
If you ever want a glimpse into my life as a teen, Billy Idol speaks volumes in terms of what my attitude towards life was like at that time. He's a good reflection of me...ironically. Keep in mind that the book version of me (Jessie) is nowhere near like this - I have a much darker soul.
Yes, sometimes I was out of control as a young adult, in many ways I was very wild and moody. Having a hearing loss compounded on that, making it much harder and much worse to deal with. You are probably...

Accessibility
Posted by jennifer gibson on Thursday, January 12, 2012,
I've been involved with various organizations and committees for many years. I'm currently on the local Accessibility Committee, part of an amazing team of people, able and disabled, who are dedicated to finding solutions and breaking down barriers in our community. We are constantly coming up with potential ideas, some of which are long term, to educate the public and increase the awareness of disabilities that exist in our town. Not only do many businesses, stores and medical buildings a...

Food for thought Part 2
Posted by jennifer gibson on Wednesday, January 11, 2012,
Now, I can only imagine how perplexed some of you may be from my insight regarding the person who just lost their hearing and that I wasn't exactly very sympathetic of their situation. You may be familiar with the phrase "Walk a mile in their shoes." That's exactly where that person is right now, they've only gone a mile whereas I've gone thousands and thousands to miles. They still have thousands of miles to go and I want them to learn to live with it on their own to gain experience and i...

Food for thought...
Posted by jennifer gibson on Wednesday, January 11, 2012,
As someone who is severely hard of hearing, I have found that the best form of communication is via email or texting. It's easy and accessible a part of today's society, everyone does this which is very cool. Who would've thought that someone like me would be mainstream, become a part of the hip crowd?
Growing up was an isolating experience, particularly since I was the only kid in school with a disability. At that time, my hearing loss was glaringly obvious. I wore a body aid which meant...

My Life
Posted by jennifer gibson on Monday, January 9, 2012,
If you are already a big fan of my books, Sway and Compass, you are probably asking the question "How?! How the heck did you survive?!"
To tell you the truth, I'm still asking myself the same question. Honestly, I really don't know how in the world I didn't lose my mind a long time ago. If anyone else had been in my shoes, they would've most likely be left quaking in them. I know it's unbelievably cliche but what you experience in life, especially the good, bad and downright ugly, it can m...

Happy New Year!

Can you believe it's already 2012?! Wow, time goes by really quickly!
For those of you following me, I'm currently working on my third novel - a continuation of Jessie's journey. This came as a complete surprise, I never expected to write past the first book, Sway. So, to be writing a third one is simply mind blowing!
There are lots of new twists, deeper revelations, and surprising changes in this one. It's a real page turner. And it's based on my life as a hard of hearing teenager - meanin...
